The peninsula was affected by three European civilizations Roman, Slavic and Germanic, which had a main influence on the cultural heritage. The highest point of Istria is Uèka a natural park, containing several protected plants and animal species.
Pula situated at the southest end of the Istrian peninsula has been in existence since 3 thousand years. It represents a very fine combination of the old and modern city where many famous writers and composers have found inspiration for their masterpieces. Many cultural and historical monuments dominate its panorama and represent today the unique setting of various cultural and artistic events. Beaches stretch along, 100 km of beautiful and indented coast. In addition to lovely beaches, sport grounds, restaurants and valuable cultural – historic monument and museums, Pula also offers its visitors theatre performances, film festival, concerts and rich entertainment program. Special attractions are summer concerts, opera and fill performances in the impressive Arena, roman amphitheatre dating from the 1st century.
Fasana a town, small port and fishermen's centre in the south-western part of the western Istria coast in the Fasana Strait, 8 km northwest of Pula. It is located on a low part of the coast, well protected from the sea by Brijuni Islands. Gentle hills in the interior are under orchards, vineyards and olive-groves; the landscape is dominated by pine forests. Chief occupations include fishing, fish-processing and building of smaller fishing boats. Many different flags have sailed in the Fasana canal throughout the centuries, the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Austro-Hungarians met and fought in the area leaving many traces behind. Picturesque squares, old close-built houses, narrow stone paved streets as well as three churches are only a part of Fasana's cultural heritage. The town port and squares are now days a beautiful stage, hosting numerous cultural and music events during the summer. Fasana has always been well known for its excellent wine and olive oil. Fish and meat, gastronomic deliciousness, and quality wine offered by local restaurants can surely meet the requirements of any gourmand. Beautiful beaches, clear sea, Mediterranean climate and lush vegetation have contributed to the development of tourism in Fasana, whose inhabitants have always been known for their hospitality.
